Only needs a small amount of work apparently...

Didn’t Hammond have pretty much that same thing on the TGUK cheap Alfa challenge?
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:26 |

I think it was May but yeah there was one on there.

Gah... Where is it?
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:30 |

It was May for sure ... and this thing is just nice.

Almost 300 miles from Newcastle, not sure where exactly.

I thought it was close! Never mind.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:32 |

Oh wait, yeah it was May. Hammond had the spider.
I just remember them grating cheese over the engine, haha.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:33 |

Haha I think you dodged a bullet anyway, a cheap Alfa is probably one of the most expensive cars you could buy.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:33 |

It is nice looking.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:34 |

Haha yeah. Jeremy had the 75 that was in very poor shape by the end of the challenge...
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:34 |

So London then. Either way very big NOPE. I hate Alfas especially that one.

Haha, the tires were color coordinated!
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:36 |

But £250, it’s worth it just to trash around some fields with. MOT be damned!

needs a small amount of work
So its an Alfa?
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:39 |

This has to be scam. There is no such thing as a rust free Alfa.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:41 |

If that’s all you want it for we have an MOT fail Micra sitting on our driveway that runs for like £200 less haha. I wanted to go banger racing in it but I don’t have a trailer to take it anywhere.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:42 |

Indeed, they come from the factory like that. All the thrill of a project car in a brand new car.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:42 |

The modern ones don’t actually rust that badly, shocking I know.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:43 |

I have 3 trailers and I live 15 minutes away. Just sayin’.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 19:46 |

You just had to ruin it, didn’t you.
I know Alfas and Lancias have been using galvanised steel since the 90s, I’m just trying to keep demand and prices down so I can pick a good one up for cheap later on.

Unfortunately it’s my parent’s old car so it’s back in Hartlepool on their driveway. Although I’d be very interested in seeing if we could enter it in a banger race and drive alternate rounds splitting the cost somehow. I know a guy who used to banger race with his dad and they’d do a round each until the car gave up.
Probably a terrible idea but could be fun haha.

I don’t think prices are going up here any time soon. You can get a pretty decent one of these for £1’000.

Hey count me in! Although I thought you were talking about your girlfriends Micra, have her parents let you do any body work yet? (Not a euphemism)
![]() 05/10/2015 at 20:01 |

Na my dad had a pretty much identical one (these Micras spread like a bad rash) which was a bit more advanced in rust and failed an MOT.
I’ve scrubbed and zinc primered the front crossmember so far. Decided to just ignore them and do the work anyway since I know how quickly these Micras degrade and she couldn’t afford to replace it.
This is the MOT fail Micra.

But we should try and put something together if we can find a track nearby that holds banger racing. I think the last one I went to was near Middlesborough. I’ll have to look into it tomorrow.

Seems to be a thing with 90s Fiat products, even the stupendously rare cars like the Kappa Wagon and Coupé can be had for less than 2,5G.

Their reputation scares people away most likely.

Excellent. I’ve never even been to a banger race before, will we need a roll cage?
![]() 05/10/2015 at 20:12 |
|
The last one I went to (bearing in mind this was over 5 years ago) they just had some box section welded into a rudimentary half cage. Most of the cars had almost no fabrication in them. All most of them had was a helmet and gloves (which I have) other than the cheap cage.
I’ll have to see if I can find a rule book or something, they did have scrutineering of some sort. Given the condition of the cars I think the inspection was just to make sure they weren’t currently on fire.

Fantastic, let me know, can order steel for cheap-ish and I have a welder et al.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 20:18 |

Cool I’ll get on it. Basically depends how serious the fabrication needs to be and if entry fees are silly high. Given how many people participate it must be fairly accessible, there were kids as young as 15 racing when I was there.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 20:26 |

Which is a good thing because these are actually not bad cars. Their loss, my gain.
![]() 05/10/2015 at 20:30 |

Indeed. I got my new car for cheap for very similar reasons. Renault have kind of a shitty reputation so I paid £3500 for a just over 4 year old car with 35k on it. It was over £10’500 new and an equivalent Micra etc was hundreds if not £1’000 more. They don’t even have any known reliability issues.
Like you say, their loss, my gain.

Dug into the banger racing thing and cost wise it isn’t fantastic. Have to apply for a licence which is about £70 then it’s only one driver per car. Need basic tubular cage (box section is outlawed now) and 4 point harness. I worked it out at about £400 all in for basically one weekend since that’s about all the car would survive. Plus we couldn’t share the car like people used to. Bit of shame it’s not as accessible as I expected really.
Although while hunting for that I found out that Teeside Autodrome does fortnightly track days, run what ya brung for £35. I think I’ll have to check one of those out. Might get some laughs in a 1.2 Twingo haha.
![]() 05/11/2015 at 15:40 |
|
That’s probably pushing it a bit, especially when we each need a car! Autodrome may be worth a shout though, £35 for how long?
![]() 05/11/2015 at 15:48 |
|
Yeah it’s way past what I’d be willing to pay.
It’s 5-8pm I believe, not sure how long you can actually be on track, what classes you get divided into etc. The info suggests you just turn up, only safety gear necessary seems to be a helmet which I think they can rent out. I’ve driven the track before in an Atom and it’s a decent little beginner track.
I’m actually going there for a drifting experience in June so I’ll be able to ask them about it then. I get these driving experiences from family for Christmas usually since I never ask for anything, that’s how I got to drive the Atom too.

Front drive, so it’s no sports car, but still a bargain.
